Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
