British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
